NECTA have designed a wide portfolio of courses, which address the changing needs of both the white goods market and the electrical market in which British Gas Electrical Services Division are involved.
Well clearly it enables British Gas Electrical Services Division to widen their portfolio of services that we can offer to our customers, from simple HEC repairs, which may involve changing a simple light socket or light fitting, to being able to carry out full house rewires.
The facilities are absolutely superb. All across the country, the classes which they have, in varying sizes, are all air-conditioned. This makes it a pleasant atmosphere to train in, especially when you are there for possibly eight hours. In addition to that, at Rotherham, they now have twelve purpose built practical training booths. This enables a trainee to be able to design, build and test a full household installation, including things such as overhead lighting, shower circuits, bathrooms, cookers, etc. In addition they have a testing booth in which the tutors at NECTA can install various faults and it’s then up to the trainee to prove his competency and his skills, by being able to identify the faults and show the method of correction.
One of the major benefits is that we don’t have tutors at NECTA who are simply delivering from notes. They are all very experienced in their own fields and they are able to add personal experiences and anecdotes. This really helps in getting the message across to trainees.
Clearly, British Gas operate nationwide. If we were restricted to one training centre, then it would involve long periods of travel for our engineers to attend courses, and almost certainly overnight accommodation, which (would) have a knock-on effect on their home life. The benefit of having three centres are that we can reduce travel time, reduce overnight stays. There is a knock-on effect as well. We have to remember that we are here to provide a service to our customers, and if the engineer is away on a training course for any period of time it affects our standards of service.
It’s absolutely superb. Over the last seven years we’ve built quite an extensive relationship with NECTA. It’s not simply a business relationship, it’s a relationship of mutual respect between both parties, (based on) the assistance we can give (each other). Certainly, as well, from the point of view of the additional assistance that NECTA can give to our field based engineers.
I would recommend NECTA, clearly. They have a can do attitude. It’s a family atmosphere. They are extremely supportive of us and our requirements. I wouldn’t have any doubt at all in recommending them to people.
Having the partnership with NECTA has been really good. It’s identified lots of courses that weren’t available before which people (our employees) are now going on.
The training that people have been given has certainly improved the competency of our employees, which has I suppose, indirectly, contributed to the profitability of our business.
The On-Line system is open to all our employees, which gives them details of any future courses, and also the competency profiles, (which give details of) who as been authorised on a particular site.
The feedback I’ve had has been very good. The quality has been very high and on the whole I’m happy with it.
Yes, absolutely, I’ve done so already this week. It’s a very professional service I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anybody.
We get a very professional service from NECTA. We get dedicated people with a lot of knowledge about the wiring regulations and low voltage electrical networks, which has been really useful. It’s been very good for us. On the whole I’m very happy with the partnership we have with the company.
After having a look around the facilities and talking to some of the tutors I decided to take up the NECTA Starter Sparky course. It covered everything I needed to start work as a domestic electrician. (This included) wiring regulations, EAL courses, City & Guilds courses; everything I needed really. The class sizes where quite small which was really good. It meant that if there was anything that I was struggling with, which happened on more than one occasion, then the tutors had time to go through it with me on a one-to-one basis, which made it a lot easier and a lot less daunting.
I spent ten weeks here on the NECTA training course. It was really good. I was often greeted with a cup of tea and a smile, which went a long way to making it a pleasant experience. The people were really friendly and helpful. The tutors really know what they are doing. It was obvious how experienced they are and how long they’ve spent in the industry. Even now in my day-to-day work if I come across a problem, I’m not sure how to deal with, I know that they are there to call up to offer advice if I need it. I would recommend NECTA to anybody.
The course was great. Everything I needed was provided. The books, the course notes, everything for the modules, workshop facilities, everything was there and already provided. And lunch was provided as well, which was a bonus!
For me the bottom line was that I got my exams and qualifications, and I walked straight into a job with a small local electrical firm. I started earning straight away. For me, that says a lot. I feel like I’ve had a solid grounding, which has prepared me properly for my career. I’m even going back. I’m going to be topping up to get my 17th edition in the next couple of months. I’m really looking forward to getting back there and getting stuck into it.
